Hi Jake,
Thanks for comment. Hope you enjoy the posts. Good to know that Ccleaner works well for you, as well as Diskkeeper. I've used Disk-keeper before (free version) on a laptop who's defrag.msc had become corrupt & found it rather handy.

Overall, I'm not a fan of adding software onto a system when the OS already has it included. Specifically I'm referring to CCleaner vs Disk Cleanup. I just downloaded and ran both. I did not allow either to make any changes. I just had them both analyze the amount of the HD that could be recovered. Believe it or not Disk Cleanup could recover more space. Even excluding the file compression option.

XP Disk Cleanup could recover 573,446KB (approx 560 MB) without using file compression. With compression, this went up to about 3.3 GB.

Ccleaner could recover 434.6 MB when choosing all of the advanced options.

Diskkeeper's realtime defragmentation is quite handy. Absolutely, couldn't agree with you more.
However, Vista can run it for you on a scheduled basis. So you set it to run daily at noon while at lunch. With a good Core 2 Duo processor, you can easily run that in the background while surfing, checking mail, etc. Also, in the interest of my wallet, I'd just assume go ahead and click on the OS provided defrag.

Cheers!

Nice tips and the pictorial analogy of fragmentation. Cleaning out the junk and defragging helps keep the PC smooth and fast. I run CCleaner once a week and defrag automatically with Diskeeper09. It does a fabulous job defragging in real time whenever the system is idle.

Thanks for the feedback Capri. If you think you're mean, take the image below, copy and paste it into an email to send to everyone in your address book. Not just 10 people, but EVERYONE. Then you won't be mean anymore. ;)
<img src="http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a88/scimeron/IPM.gif" alt="Ready For Launch!" />

I appreciate you pointing out the invention of the sick kid story. That also irks me to no end and had edited it out from the original draft as I didn't want to come across as overly cold-hearted. BUT, since you bring it up..From what I understand, it's a variation of the urban legend from 25 years ago about a supposed sick boy in Scotland who wanted a postcard from every country before he died, blah blah blah. I guess that post office still gets postcards from people who believe in it.

Guess I'm mean then. :) Seriously, I wish people would look up these things instead of forwarding them around w/o question. I know some people are new to the net, and have little or no idea how many forms these chain letters take and what emotional angles they use. A lot of them think it is only a chain letter if it tells you to stuff an envelope with money or that you'll get bad luck for not forwarding an email. Not true. Anything viral is a chain letter, including that fictional touching 911 story about a heroic dog or the one about a new father being saved by a flat tire or some such thing. And don't get me started on the so-called "friendship" chains, they and the sick/missing kid and any religious chain letters are among the worst. Religious ones - because I resent how God gets used as a hook to pass on spam, and so many people who share my belief in Christ simply forward anything blindly because if it has any religious reference in it then it must come from God, right? WRONG! And whoever invented sick kid stories to get people crying and passing on a bunch of lies - is particularly despicable!
